Lane Frost
Lane Frost was and is still considered one of the greatest bull riders in the history of rodeo. He was born on Oct. 12 1963. His first bull he got on was at the age of 9 and decided to just ride Calfs until age of 15, when he started to ride bulls for good. His parents didn't really want the rodeo life for him but helped him and incouraged his every step into his soon to be famed rodeo life. He met his wife at a rodeo and they got married on January 5th, 1984.
A bull no one had ever riden in 309 tries named "Red Rock", Lane set a challenge for himself to ride Red Rock in 7 tries. The challenge was later called "The Challenge of Champions". On Lanes 7th try he rode Red Rock. The Challenge of Champions is still around today, it allows bull riders from all over come and ride bulls in memory of Lane.
On July 30, 1989 at the Cheyenne Rodeo, Lane drew a bull named "Taking Care of Business", after a 87-point ride Lane dismounted the bull and landed on his knee's, the bull turned and hit Lane in the ribs with his horns, breaking several ribs. Lane got up as if nothing happened and started running toward the chutes. On his way he signaled for help and fell to the ground, as he hit the ground broken ribs punctured his heart. Lane was pronounced dead when the paramedics came to him.
Tuff Hedeman, one of Lanes best friends rode in the NFR the year after Lanes death and rode the needed 8 seconds, but in amazment to the crowd he ALSO rode another 8 seconds for Lane and his family. Tuff Hedeman was named 10th NFR Champion.
Cody Lambert, another one of Lanes best friends (one of the founders for the PBR) designed a protective vest for bull riders to help prevent anymore deaths like Lanes. It is a requirement for all High school bull riders to wear a vest. PBR, CBR, and NFR bull riders take comfort in the vest even though its not required to wear.
